ENDANGERED SPECIES

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Endangered Animals Campaign
There are hundreds of animals and wildlife species around the world that face the very real possibility of extinction. And sadly much of the reason for them being on the endangered species list is due to humans destroying their natural habitat or poaching them for their skins and horns or simply shooting them for sport and wall trophies.

We created a poster that highlights an animal on the endangered animal list found at the WWF World Wildlife Foundation.

PROJECT DIRECTION

Deciding to make the poster about the Indian elephant, I found out that they live by water. Using such knowledge, I made a river landscape that would fill the silhouette of the elephant. The landscape, based on the  Yamuna River, depicts a habitat for the Indian elephant.

Knowing that I would need to make the silhouette more distinguishable, I emphasized various features of the elephant, such as its face, eyes, and ears. To make the features look more dynamic, I added shading to certain parts of the head.

To fill up the empty space outside of the elephant, I recreated a grassland, another habitat of the Indian elephant. I used brush strokes and a gradient to keep the grassland simple to keep it from drawing attention away from the elephant. The grass keeps a monochromatic color scheme compared to the more dynamic-looking elephant.

FINAL ANALYSIS

In terms of envoking the intended message of awareness, I think that the poster can raise awareness to the viewer, but could emphasize certain things more, such as poaching for ivory. For example, I could have drawn an elephant with tusks to emphasize the issue more. I also could have made the shading look less odd-looking.
